Genres I would never write in: Horror or serious crime. Too grim. There's enough terrible stuff in life. I don't need to make up more.
Doing descriptions of places (or anything) in writing: Well, a couple of things ... First, try to pick out what's the interesting or pertinent point of the description. Is it that the building is red brick, or that it's exactly like the whole street? Second, read a lot and see how others describe things. They differ.
  Just barely passed my driver's test. I drove over a curb when doing a turn. And, when he asked me to back up straight for 50 feet, I ended up on the other side of the street. Somehow, this was judged to be acceptable driving skill.
  If adverbs are used well, I never notice them. If they paradoxically and abruptly appear unceremoniously, I rapidly begin to get increasingly annoyed parenthetically.
